Job Description

Montrose is an international development project management and consultancy company providing support to clients operating in the developing world. Specialised in the sectors of health, education, rural livelihoods and private sector development, our clients include bilateral and multilateral development agencies, the private sector, Non-Governmental Organisations and other development stakeholders.

Background

Montrose has been contracted to support the Monitoring, Evidence Learning and Review (MELR) of the FCDO Saving lives in Sierra Leone (SLiSL) programme. SLiSL seeks to save women’s and children’s lives by improving the quality, availability and accessibility of reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services. The programme’s purpose is to achieve a sustainable step-change in health outcomes for under-fives, adolescents, pregnant women and mothers. The five-year programme is divided into two phases: Phase 1 from October 2016 to September 2018, and Phase 2 from October 2018 to March 2021. The extension phase is from April to June 2021.

This Terms of Reference outlines work to be covered during the extension phase of the SLiSL.

Purpose of the Consultancy

The consultant will serve as a Qualitative Data Analyst as part of the team carrying out this consultancy, focused on analysis of qualitative data on equity of access to health services, as defined by Levesque et al.

The consultant is expected to have qualitative analysis skills using content analysis; experience with and access to a qualitative analysis software programme; knowledge/understanding of equity of access to health services concepts, specifically as detailed by Levesque et al.; preferably specific experience in analysis pertaining to access for health services for either adolescents or persons with disability. Specific Roles and Responsibilities of the Consultant

The following are the specific roles and responsibilities of the Qualitative Data Analyst.

  • Attending a one-day orientation with the Research Consultant on proposed approach for qualitative data analysis.
  • Analysing qualitative transcripts through reading and re-reading text so as to make sense of the information there in and get acquainted with it.
  • Generating a thematic codebook, based on Levesque et al., to be used for generating themes and sub themes in line with the objectives of the analysis. This will involve producing summaries, abstracts, coding and memos.
  • Coding notes from Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), and In-Depth Interviews (IDIs). This will involve synthesising data (conceptualisation, interpretation, coding and categorising data).
  • Reporting on the Qualitative Research by examining relationships and patterns between categories and displaying data authenticating conclusions.
  • Drafting qualitative analysis report, including: description of results in terms of themes and sub-themes, including quotations; discussion of results; annex for final code book.
  • Integration of comments and feedback on draft report.
  • Providing specific quotations in the report and as and when requested for by the study team.
  • Ensuring the daily upload of the complete data.
  • Completing daily check-ins with Montrose project team via a WhatsApp group that will be created for that purpose.
  • Being available to check-in daily with the Montrose Programme Team.
  • Escalating challenges that are too difficult to resolve to the Montrose Programme Team.


Requirements

Essential skills and Qualifications

  • Experience in qualitative analysis using content analysis, including application of conceptual frameworks, code book development, and coding using a qualitative analysis software.
  • Excellent report writing skills and experience in producing high quality reports on outcomes of qualitative analysis.
  • Ability to understand and apply conceptual frameworks related to equity of access healthcare by Levesque et al.[1]
  • Access to a computer, qualitative analysis software, and internet connection.
  • Understanding of basic concepts of confidentiality and data security.
