Job Description

Montrose is an international development project management and consultancy company providing support to clients operating in the developing world. Specialised in the sectors of health, education, rural livelihoods and private sector development, our clients include bilateral and multilateral development agencies, the private sector, Non-Governmental Organisations, and other development stakeholders.

Background

Montrose has been contracted to support the Monitoring, Evidence Learning and Review (MELR) of the FCDO Saving lives in Sierra Leone (SLiSL) programme. SLiSL seeks to save women’s and children’s lives by improving the quality, availability and accessibility of reproductive, maternal, new born and child health services. The programme’s purpose is to achieve a sustainable step-change in health outcomes for under-fives, adolescents, pregnant women and mothers. The five-year programme is divided into two phases: Phase 1 from October 2016 to September 2018, and Phase 2 from October 2018 to March 2021. The extension phase is from April to June 2021.

This Terms of Reference (ToR) outlines work to be covered during the extension phase of the SLiSL focused on qualitative data collection on the topic of equity of access to health services for adolescents and for persons with disability.

Overview of Montrose’s Scope of Work for the Client

The following tasks have been identified for this technical engagement:

Transcription and Translation

  • Participate in briefing (online) on required approach for transcription and translation.
  • Receive electronic sound files and save in a safe place
  • Transcribe sound file word-for-word into Word document template
  • Translate Krio/Mende/Temne into English
  • Name Word document files according to prescribed approach
  • Submit transcription to Qualitative Research Consultant
  • Provide feedback on questions or comments from Qualitative Research Consultant after quality review
  • Safe deletion of sound files

Purpose of the Consultancy

The consultant will serve as a Transcriptor. S/He will be responsible for transcription and translation of FGD, KII, and IDI interviews into English. See sections on Specific Roles and Responsibilities of the Consultant and Deliverables, below.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities of the Enumerator

The following are the specific roles and responsibilities of the Enumerator for each phase of the work.

Induction: Attend a brief online induction

  • Submit a signed copy of the contract and a copy of the Enumerator’s identification (National ID) for record purposes.
  • Attend a brief online induction on 10May 2021.

Translation amp; Transcription

  • Download soundfile in safe place.
  • Using the provided template and methods prescribed by the Qualitative Consultant, transcribe sound file word-for-word in the language used in the recording.
  • Translate all into English on the same file.
  • Finalise document and name using prescribed approach and submit to Qualitative Consultant.
  • Working under the leadership and guidance of Qualitative Consultant.
  • Address all quality issues/concerns/questions raised by Qualitative Consultant to finalise transcription.
  • Delete transcription and sound files once completed.

Consultant’s Relationship with the Team

  • The Transcriber will have a direct reporting line to the Qualitative Research Consultant, and Montrose Programme Manager, for any field or contractual issues, and Research Consultant, for any technical issues, should the need arise.


All work will be completed over the period of 10-30 May. Payment will be made per transcript. Draft transcripts (before Qualitative Consultant review) are expected to be submitted within three days of receipt. Once feedback from the Qualitative Consultant is provided, final version of the transcript is to be submitted within two days.

Requirements

Essential skills and Qualifications

  • Experience in translation and transcription of audio files from recorded interviews in English, Krio, and either Mende or Temne.
  • Proven experience in producing high quality transcripts
  • Access to a computer and internet connection
  • Understanding of basic concepts of confidentiality and data security
